In Maharashtra, 16 labourers dead after truck overturns


At least 15 people, including women and children, were killed on the spot and two more seriously injured after a truck carrying them overturned in Jalgaon district in north Maharashtra, police said on Monday.

According to the Jalgaon police, the accident occurred around midnight. The papaya-laden tempo truck with labourers was coming from neighbouring Dhule district and overturned near Kingaon village in Jalgaon’s Yawal taluk.

The police are investigation the cause of the accident. The injured are being treated at a rural hospital, they added.

The deceased, members of around five families, hailed from the villages of Abhoda, Kerhale, Vivare and Raver.

Condoling the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Heart-wrenching truck accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest”.
